Frequently Asked Questions

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ENERGY SUSPENSION® RED AND BLACK POLYURETHANE COMPONENTS?

Both colors are made from our signature Hyper-Flex™ performance polyurethane. A select few of our black polyurethane components contain graphite to add a lubrication property. Graphite is not added to the red formulation because black graphite discolors the red polyurethane. Graphite does not compromise our polyurethane formulas.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN OEM RUBBER, AFTERMARKET RUBBER, AND POLYURETHANE?

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) choose to use rubber in their bushings for several reasons, including costs and comfort characteristics. Rubber offers less NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) since it is soft and compliant, however, during spirited driving, the pliability allows for changes in alignment during acceleration, braking, and hard cornering.

Much like your rubber tires, rubber bushings wear out, especially when considering common factors such as heat and harsh fluids. Rubber bushings with direct UV exposure will dry out, crack, and rot, causing vital suspension components to function poorly. Some OE replacement parts use lesser quality grade rubber which may wear or fail quicker than the OE factory rubber.

Unlike rubber, our Hyper-Flex™ polyurethane is extremely resistant to harsh fluids. Our bushings will not dry out, rot, or crack from heat or UV exposure. Polyurethane offers superior precision during spirited driving, eliminating deflection caused by the soft pliability of rubber.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF AN ENERGY SUSPENSION PRODUCT FITS MY VEHICLE?

CAN I BUY YOUR PRODUCT DIRECTLY FROM ENERGY SUSPENSION®?

Unfortunately, we do not sell direct. We are the product developer and manufacturer. Energy Suspension products are redistributed by qualified warehouse distribution centers and are available through automotive retail stores, automotive repair shops, as well as authorized online retailers. Click Here to access our Dealer Locator to find a retailer near you.

WHAT IS REQUIRED TO INSTALL POLYURETHANE BUSHINGS?

Our products can most often be installed using common automotive or motorcycle tools and require knowledge of automotive repair. Each product package includes general instructions, it is recommended that you read over the entire instruction sheet before beginning work.

In many cases, our polyurethane products simply install just as their rubber counterparts. It is recommended that, if you are unfamiliar with this type of work, that you refer to a qualified service center.

If you choose to do this work yourself, it is recommended that a factory service manual be obtained for the proper procedures pertaining to removal, replacement and proper torque specifications for your vehicle.

Our instruction sheets are intended as a guideline for the safe installation of Energy Suspension’s polyurethane bushings, once you have removed the factory components from your vehicle.

Prior to installation, make sure that your vehicle is in excellent mechanical condition and that there is no existing suspension or steering problems. Our parts are designed to work only with a vehicle that is in good state of repair.

WHAT KIND OF GREASE SHOULD I USE BEFORE PRODUCT INSTALLATION?

Our specially formulated Formula 5 Prelube is the best product you can use to grease our polyurethane products. Formula 5 Prelube is included in most kits which require lubrication and additional Prelube may be purchased from your local Energy Suspension authorized retailer. Energy's Formula 5 Prelube may also be purchased in bulk for commercial shop use.

If for any reason you are unable to use our Formula 5 Prelube, we suggest using a synthetic, water resistant, marine-grade grease for optimal lubrication and retention.

DURING CONTROL ARM INSTALLATION, HOW DO I REMOVE THE RUBBER PART, WHEN REUSING THE OUTER METAL SHELLS?

The easiest way to do this is with a propane or butane torch. Leave the shell in the arm and evenly heat-up the outside of the shell. Light heat is enough to melt the adhesive that is used to bond the rubber to the shell. At no point should the flame directly contact rubber, and if your bushings go up in flames, reduce the heat. Be careful not to damage the arm or shell with excess heat. Once the adhesive bond starts to separate, a slight smoke will emit from the bushing and the rubber bushing will visibly appear detached from the metal shell. At this point, simply push the rubber out with a tool or a press. Use extra caution to avoid melting the shell.

MY ORIGINAL CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS OUTER METAL SHELLS ARE DAMAGED. THE ENERGY SUSPENSION CONTROL ARM BUSHING SET THAT I RECEIVED DID NOT COME WITH METAL SHELLS. WHERE CAN I OBTAIN REPLACEMENT SHELLS?

Many brands still offer new original factory replacements from their dealerships parts department. Some aftermarket companies offer new replacements which are made to original specifications. You may also find luck with salvage yards.

I HAVE A CUSTOM APPLICATION. WITH THE DIMENSIONAL SIZES ON A BUSHING THAT I HAVE, CAN I BUY BUSHINGS BASED ON THE DIMENSIONS I SUPPLY?

Answer: For liability and safety reasons, our catalog lists the great majority of our bushings by vehicle application, not by dimension. We stand by the product fit based on the specific vehicle application only. Except for a selected number of products listed as "UNIVERSAL," we do not recommend using strictly dimensions for a product application.
